Exercise Tip of the Month - April 2008
Did you know...
- Cancer is the leading cause of premature death in Canada
- Based on current risks, 38% of Canadian women and 44% of Canadian men will develop
some sort of cancer in their lifetime
- At least 50% of cancers can be prevented through healthy living
Make a commitment this month to become more informed on what YOU can do to help
reduce your risk of developing cancer.
Get Active to help maintain a healthy body weight
- 60 min of light to moderate exercise every day or 30 min of vigorous activity 4x/week
Eat a healthy diet
Be a non-smoker and avoid second-hand smoke
- Lung cancer – the most preventable kind- is the leading cause of cancer death among
Canadian men and women
Reduce Alcohol intake
- Research shows that drinking small amounts of alcohol can be good for your heart.
However, too much alcohol can damage your liver, promote high blood pressure and
increase the risk for certain cancers.

Muscle Move of the Month - April 2008
"Stand Strong"
A new way to trim and tone, strengthen and stretch your torso muscles.
Starting Position:
Stand with a resistance band in your hands; lifted overhead with moderate amount
of resistance on the band (by pulling the band apart). Squeeze your gluteus, pull
in your abdominals and draw both shoulders down away from your ears. Maintain a
tall position throughout the action.
Action:
as you exhale, lean to one side, pause to breathe in; exhale and lift to starting
position *maintaining tension (stretch) with the band..
